You never know what is behind you!

The previous post documented our investigations at Orange Hall in old St. Marys, Georgia. In the post we mentioned recording a few interesting EVPs. We are just now discovering the world of "white noise" EVP communications. We have learned from other experienced investigators that no matter what type of spirit you are dealing with- they usually will want to "talk". Learning to speak with respect and as if you are speaking to a regular person is very important. Doing your homework/research on a site and knowing a the facts of a spirit's story will also help with starting your communications. Also keeping in mind that generally we are from a very different time period than that of the spirit we are talking to is important. You should not use slang terms or heaven forbid any curse words. These will confuse and offend. We will attempt to add to the site one of our recordings from Orange Hall. In the recording we were walking in the basement pantry area- asking if anyone was there and if so if they wanted to speak to us. After reviewing the recordings we picked up a voice in the background....saying...simply "Behind you"
This will repeat on the recording for you. I must admit that if I had heard this audibly at the time I was in the pantry... I might have been tempted to make a quick exit!!! It definitely gives us chills still when we hear it.

Orange Hall - Saint Mary's Georgia

Early this fall we decided to wander down the road to old St. Mary’s to visit some haunted sites. One being Orange Hall, an antebellum mansion built in the late 1830s. Daniel immediately felt “something” on the site and had irregular readings on his K2 meter even in the yard and on the exterior of the old mansion. On our first visit he only took photos on the outside and caught on quite impressive orb that was certainly not of humidity or dust origin.

After additional research we returned to the site. We learned that the original owner the town’s Presbyterian minister Horace Pratt had built the home. Tragically his first wife died at the young age of 29. He remarried and named his first daughter after his lost love – Jane. Tragically this little Jane whom he loved dearly caught the yellow fever at age six and also died.

Orange Hall is said to be one of the most active sites of paranormal activity on the southeast coast. Many sightings of so called spirits, strange sounds, and unexplained happenings have occurred in the old mansion over the years. The Hall is said to be haunted by three spirits- one of an old man, an old woman, and a young girl of about 6 or 8 years old- she may be young Jane Pratt.

We did return to investigate the interior of Orange Hall and had some amazing experiences- including high K2 readings, temperature changes, some great EVP recordings and we even had a chair to move while we were there! It is not often that you can actually have things to HAPPEN when you are “hunting” but that is fun when it does. We did see several shadows pass by windows and were able to catch one on film which you can see if you look closely at this photo taken in the basement. There is also a photo of an orb on a sofa that was confirmed not to be a bug or dust. It was a great hunting night at Orange Hall.

Light Anomalies

As we stated in our article on orbs and orb streaks we do believe that some do contain forms of paranormal activity. Hunters and viewers alike should always be aware that many orbs and light anomalies can be explained by natural causes such as dust, humidity or other things such as camera straps, fingers too close to lens and even human breath too close to the lens when the photo was taken.

Rarely we catch what we refer to as “light anomalies”. These are often in streaks of color or unusual shapes of color. We aren’t sure if these are spirits, this is still under study. We have had higher readings with some of our equipment before capturing some of these phenomenon, but more investigating is needed to make any conclusions as to their origins. You also have to be aware that some “light anomalie” photos can be simply caused by double exposure or if a camera has been aimed towards a light source and then moved suddenly.

The samples below are of two different types of “light anomalies” we have photographed. One series of photos was taken at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Fernandina Beach, Florida – it shows several amazing purple and pink colored anomalies. Our K2 meter was showing very high and active readings during the time these photos were taken.

The second series shows a different type of light energy in a dark alley way in old Savannah, Georgia. The camera had not been moved rapidly when these photos were taken and several photos were taken at the same time, one at a distance to show the light activity that was in the area. It is hard to explain the source of the light or the directional movement- anyone?

Orbs and Orb Streaks

In my investigation of the paranormal and photographing of areas with high paranormal activity it is common for me to encounter spirits in their manifested form as "orbs". These circular balls of light usually occur in areas where my EMF reader has detected higher levels of activity. I have had good success in capturing several "orbs" in many locations.

Digital cameras and use of flash photography seem to help in taking photos of orbs. The experienced hunter will soon be able to distinguish "real orbs" from "false orbs" which are often caused when there is a higher level of humidity in the area or dust particles. I am careful not to get too excited about "orb" photos without knowing the conditions that they were taken in or before carefully examining the photos.

Spirits sometimes manifest as "orbs of light" in different colors and if you are lucky you can catch a "orb" in motion. Photos of orbs moving are rarer and are seen as "streaks of light" across the night sky. I plan to publish several of my better "orb" photos on the site and I'll also publish samples of some "false orbs" so that you hopefully see the difference.

I believe that many of the orbs I have photographed even have faces visible inside the orbs that can be seen upon close inspection. My first post is of a orb and orb streak taken at Colonial Park Cemetery in Savannah. My dog Ellie May is helpful in detecting spirits and she often comes along on my ghost huntings. These photos were the result of Ellie May's barking at a area in the cemetery. When the first photo was taken you could only see one small orb. Ellie continued to bark so I quickly took the next photo which showed the orb "in motion". If you carefully examine the photo you can actually see about five different areas where the orb is seen moving through the streak of light. Very cool photo indeed.

Little Gracie Watson

Little Gracie Watson was born in 1883, the only child of W.J. and Frances Watson. Mr. Watson managed the Pulaski House, which was one of Savannah's leading hotels at that time. Gracie often played the role of hostess at many of the parties her mother hosted for Savannah’s elite high society women. She enjoyed being the center of attention, however the parties would often soon bore her and she would return to her play. It was said that the women enjoyed the parties, especially charming little Gracie, and when she would disappear to play (often underneath the stairwells at the back of the hotel) the ladies would ask “Where’s Gracie?” When Gracie had left the party many took that as a signal that the party wasn’t fun anymore and they would all soon depart. Gracie also charmed the guest at the hotel, but she was mainly the “apple” of her father’s eye.

Tragically, a few days before Easter, in April 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia at the age of six. Her parents were distraught with grief. Mr. Watson kept little Gracie’s body in her room at the hotel for five days before allowing any funeral plans. After her burial, he commissioned a local rising sculptor, John Walz, to carve a life-sized monument from a favorite photograph of Little Gracie. This delicately detailed statue of Georgia marble now stands in the infamous Bonaventure Cemetery where it has captured the interest of thousands for almost a century.

Mr. and Mrs. Watson were never the same after losing Gracie. W.J. slipped into a deep depression and the couple finally moved from Savannah – leaving Little Gracie alone. It is said that folks have heard a child softly sobbing at her gravesite, perhaps Gracie missing her lost parents. Others say they have seen tears run down the statue’s face or caught a glimpse of her turning her head. There have been many recorded sightings of a little girl believed to be Little Gracie around Savannah. Most of these sightings have been in the building of the old Pulaski House Hotel on West Bryan also near Bay Street and the Riverfront.

Little Gracie’s precious life was cut way too short, but she did leave memories for those she knew in this physical world. Now it seems that she continues to leave her tiny footprints in the spiritual world. Daniel may have caught a glimpse of Little Gracie in an abandoned shop late one evening only a few streets over from the site of Gracie’s former home at the Pulaski Hotel. Even if this little girl isn’t Gracie Watson – she still shares her beauty and charm with us in this amazing photo.

My Love of Lights

I will admit right off my love and fascination with lighthouses – whether they be “haunted” or not. I have a small collection of them that I’ve accumulated over the years and love visiting new ones whenever I have a chance. I do however feel tingles of excitement when I find out one I’m about to visit is said to be “haunted”. And of course when I’m hanging about in those musky, dark stairwells I love to hear the echoes of a good ghost story…

The Saint Simons Light

Living on St. Simons Island made it easy to begin my ghost hunting right at home. This St. Simons Lighthouse has stood on the island since 1872, replacing one destroyed during the Civil War. However, Civil War soldiers are not the haunt of this island light. As with many lights around the states… the spooks here are caused by the early and unfortunate demise of a light house keeper himself. As the legend goes….it was in 1880 when the keeper of the time, Frederick Osborne “met his maker” at the hands of his assistant John Stephens. Some say their argument was over Osborne speaking “inappropriately” to Stephen’s wife. Others will say it was Osborne’s obsessive control of Stephens that pushed them to such a deadly argument. In the end, Frederick lay dead.

Stories of Osborne’s spirit haunting the light are documented as far back as the early 1900’s only a few years after his death. Tales from keepers over the years hearing footsteps in the stairwells, the light adjusted and windows opened and closed. Some reports even tell of “smelling the kerosene of his old lamp”.

People are not the only ones who have experienced Frederick. One document from a previous caretaker the Svendsens said their family dog Jinx had multiple encounters. They would hear someone…see no one, but Jinx would growl and his hair stand on end as he followed the invisible spirit around. As stories are added over the generations it seems that Frederick Osborne is still on duty each night conducting his rounds and inspecting the light on St. Simons. On this page you will see a few photos I have taken thru the windows of the keeper’s house. It looks as if Frederick himself is standing on the other side of the glass looking right out at me in a few. After taking one of the photos chills ran up my spine, the hairs on my arms stood up and I nearly jumped off the porch!
